New beginnings

March2

Lego peole in a lomo style photoFriday was my last day as a full time employee.  I’m now working full time on Post Creative and part time at Learning and Teaching Scotland!

In the month leading up to my change in hours at LTS I found myself day dreaming about this change in life style on every bus journey and every night falling asleep.

There are so many reasons I want to be my own boss and run my own business, interesting clients and challenges and endless possibilites for growth, financially and personally.  The biggest over all reason for the change though was to have more control over my life.

When I worked in resturants it was physically demanding and the hours and salary were terrible, on the plus side there was always a trememdous amount of energy and loud, untammed fun.  I began working in an office 9-5 because it is the most convenient option when you are bringing up children.  You get home in time to cook dinner, you have weekends and evenings off, which is great but there is something about office life that wares you out all the same.

One comment I got in a performance review was that ‘I had to be aware that there were other people working in the office and most of them need a quiet working environment’.  It was like my school report cards all over again.  Nova is too loud. Nova can’t sit still. Nova is a disruption to the rest of the class.

Office life over the last 7 years has managed to do what school never could.  It made me conform, in the most part the the learning and working style of the majority of the people around me.  Nova learned to quieten down and stay in her seat for 7 hours a day… it may have been good for others but not for me.  The lights started to go out the energy dwindled… where is Nova?

I’m not saying that offices should be different from the way they are now - well, ok I am saying that, but it is not the point I’m trying to make.  Offices should be able to accomodate people who work at the best under different kinds of conditions, some do, you read about them in magazines, most of them in northern europe… but I wasn’t prepared to stay about and fight that battle.

I don’t want to work in a half sedated state I want to work at full fever pitch and that is how I will work at Post Creative!  If the other guys want to work in silence and peace and quiet we will find a way to make it work because life is too short to spend your days irritated or muffled!
